Partnership Drug and Alcohol Facts

What You Should Know About Tobacco,
Alcohol and Drug Use

The staff at Partnership for a Drug-Free Community constantly monitors national, state and local research on substance abuse so we can continue to offer valuable programming, education and expertise to our community.

To gauge the level of youth substance abuse in Madison County, Partnership for a Drug-Free Community collaborates with Huntsville City Schools, Madison County Schools, and Madison City Schools to gather survey data collected from  middle- and high- school students in Madison County every two years.  The Parents' Resource Institute for Drug Education  (PRIDE) Survey provides a snapshot of the perceptions of  local youth grades 6 - 12, regarding alcohol, tobacco, and other illicit substances. In addition to providing information about the prevalence of drug use among youth within our community, the data from this survey guides the Partnership's efforts in reaching parents, youth, educators and other professionals committed to nurturing young people to prevent substance abuse. View highlights of the results of the most recent PRIDE Survey.

The American Drug and Alcohol Survey as well as state and national statistical sources provide vital information that enables us to develop effective programming and ensure that our efforts address problems specifically in our community.

  • People who begin smoking before age 13 are significantly more likely than non-smokers to have problems with alcohol and other drugs later in life. (National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence)
  • Illegal drugs are linked to increased violence, AIDS, birth defects, drug-related crime and homelessness. (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration)
